STRUCTURE FIRE

416 STEUBEN ST.

Horseheads Fire Department was called to the scene of a structure fire at 416 Steuben St. in the village shortly before 3 pm Friday afternoon.  Minutes later the first arriving Deputy Chief reported the structure to be well involved in the front section of the house.  Crews went to defensive operations after it was determined that the structure was no longer sound enough for an interior attack.  Shortly after moving to defensive operations the second floor of the house collapsed because of heavy fire damage.  The fire was brought under control inside of a hour, afterwards crews switched to salvage and overhaul operations.  Horseheads crews were assisted at the scene by Horseheads PD, Elmira Heights Police & Fire Departments, West Elmira FD, and Town & Country FD.  Two firefighters were sent to the hospital to be evaluated for injuries incurred while fighting the blaze.  They were treated and released.
