TRUCK FIRE 3.6.07

Horseheads units responded to a tractor trailer fire on State Route 17 Westbound at exit 52-B at approximately 3:00am.  What had started out as a brake fire quickly caught the cargo compartment of the trailer on fire by the time the Fire Department arrived on scene.  Limited water supply, high winds,sub-zero temperatures and ice on the roadway were a detriment to efforts to extinguish the fire.  However, using mutual aide from Town & Country's tanker to increase the water supply, the incident was quickly brought under control.  There were no major injuries reported as a result of the incident.  The highway was shut down for several hours until the tractor trailer could be removed from the roadway.
