STRUCTURE FIRE 4.8.07

At approximately 22:53 hours on Easter night Horseheads units responded to a reported structure fire on Matthew Circle.  Deputy Chief Davies, on his way home from the firehouse saw the smoke coming from the fire and arrived on scene as the initial call was being dispatched.  Upon arrival he found the residence well involved with unconfirmed reports of entrapment.  Upon initial investigation it was determined that the residence was unoccupied at the time.  Additional units arrived on scene within minutes and began suppression operations but were almost immediately delayed by the electrical utilities to the residence becoming unstable and creating an unsafe environment for the firefighters on scene.  While waiting for NYSEG to arrive on scene to disconnect the electrical service crews concentrated their efforts on protecting exposures, mainly the house next door which had started to catch fire from the radiant heat of the original fire.  Once the utilities were disconnected crews immediately began suppression of the main fire and the scene was brought under control at 00:03 hours.  The family living in the residence escaped the fire unharmed and their were no injuries reported as a result of the incident.
